BRITAIN HOLDS FIRM AGAINST MEDICAL USE OF CANNABIS
LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's Labor government Wednesday rejected calls to
reverse a 27-year-old ruling that outlaws the use of cannabis to relieve
the suffering of the chronically sick. ``To allow any substance -- not just
cannabis -- to be prescribed (by a doctor) without adequate proof of its
effectiveness and safety would be a highly irresponsible and retrograde
step,'' Home Affairs junior minister Paul Boateng told Parliament.
