POLICE HAVE TO-DO LIST
Langley's new RCMP Supt. Janice Armstrong provided City council with a
quarterly policing update during Monday evening's meeting, receiving
positive feedback from councillors.
"I've only been in the community for five months and must say that I
am very impressed with the members we have here on the force," said
Armstrong.
She presented a list of five items which she is working on, including
a strategic plan, a crime reduction strategy, a master plan, improved
communication and enhanced visibility.
The strategic plan has not been completed as of yet but will be posted
on the RCMP website this fall.
This year's crime reduction strategy will focus on property crime,
drug-related crime, youth traffic safety and community policing.
Drug use amongst teens is an issue that Armstrong feels very
passionate about.
"I've received positive feedback from youth who are happy that we are
going after those who use and traffic drugs on and around school property."
Police recently charged a student with trafficking marijuana, she
added.
Traffic collisions are currently down and the Langley RCMP is working
towards keeping it that way.
"We are very pleased with the pro-active efforts of our officers going
after speeders and handing out traffic violations," she said.
The RCMP will also continue to make itself present in the community
through successful programs Operation Promenade and Operation Dismount.
As for the completion of a master plan, the work is still in
progress.
A good solid plan should be in place before anything is finalized,
said Armstrong.
"We know that policing is expensive so this a project we'll continue
to engage with council.
City council appeared to be on the same page.
"I look forward to the Master Plan, and hope it will reflect our
budgeting process as well," said City Mayor Peter Fassbender.
Armstrong wrapped up her presentation with news that the RCMP are
working to strengthen their communication with the public through the
creation of a new user-friendly website.
"We recently gave a volunteer firefighter a certificate for 10,000
hours of service and have so many volunteers and police auxiliary
members who deserve to be credited. A website would be a great way to
acknowledge their efforts," Armstrong said.
The site would also include recent highlights, events, crime
prevention tips and let the public know about local scams.
"All of these will contribute to what we believe to be a better
community all around," said Fassbender in response to the
presentation.
