ANTI-CRIME GRANT FOR LOW INCOME HOUSING
San Francisco - The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development on
Thursday awarded a $250,000 Safe Neighborhood Grant to Northridge
Cooperative Homes in San Francisco.
Northridge is one of 90 housing communities nationwide to receive the
grant, which funds local efforts to prevent crime, violence and illegal
drug activity.
Assistant Secretary Kevin Marchman, who was in San Francisco Thursday, said
HUD awarded a total of $20million in grants to federally subsidized,
low-income housing neighborhoods.
"This grant will begin the process of building a safer community and will
go a long way toward ending the crime and violence that all too many
residents of publicly assisted housing have to face on a daily basis,"
Marchman said.
Marchman also highlighted HUD's proposed 1999 fiscal year budget, which if
passed, would increase the San Francisco Housing Authority's budget from
$99,504 million this fiscal year, to $107,611 million.
