MEXICO OFFERS REWARD FOR DRUG LORDS

MEXICO CITY (AP) -- Stepping up its campaign against a fractured drug
cartel, Mexican prosecutors said Monday they will pay rewards of up to
$500,000 for information leading to the capture of six top suspects.

Overall, authorities have been targeting 66 members of the cartel formerly
led by Amado Carrillo Fuentes, who died in July while undergoing plastic
surgery. At least 30 of the suspects have been captured since February.

The rewards announced by drug czar Mariano Herran Salvatti are being offered
for six top leaders, including Vicente Carrillo Fuentes, the late drug
lord's brother. He is believed to have overseen gang operations on the
U.S.-Mexican border and is under a federal indictment in Texas.

Since Carrillo Fuentes' death, his organization has been bloodied by
internal power struggles and conflicts with a rival cartel led by the
Arellano Felix brothers of Tijuana, across the U.S. border from San Diego.
