ECSTASY ANYTHING BUT MILD DRUG

In the July 10 edition of your paper, you published an Ottawa Citizen
editorial criticizing the UN on a report it published on drugs. The
criticisms are incorrect and I wish to point them out.

First of all, the Ottawa Citizen incorrectly characterizes ecstasy as
a mild drug. Many people all over the world have died from even a
one-time use of ecstasy.

Secondly, it tries to portray the U.S.-style war on drugs as a
failure. I have met many Americans who admit to me that mandatory
drug testing at work forced them to quit pot, and they are better for
it. Potheads don't just smoke ganja after drinking 10 beers at a frat
party. These idiots get high any time they are just feeling a little
too stressed by life, and, according to them, they can't cope except
in this way.

In the same edition, you published a letter by Kirk Muse where he
criticizes those who are opposed to the selling of weed legally. Mr.
Muse's assertions that prohibition is the proximate cause of
criminality associated with the trafficking of marijuana is also
stupid. There are many things legal, that are sold illegally by
criminal organizations; alcohol, cigarettes, automobiles, gambling
experiences, audiovisual equipment, etc. Why has legalization not
stopped their illegal sales?

These criminal gangs are just as powerful, rich and violent as any drug lord.
