IS A DRUG WORTH ALL THAT MUCH?

Some folks' logic baffles me.

Would you ever, knowingly do something that would cause you to lose
control of your life?

Would you ever hand over all of your rights to freewill?

I wouldn't. I personally think that self control is just about the
only control I can put my hands on in the world.

No matter what we do, usually we can't control the actions of other
people --- we can't control the weather, we can't control the price
of eggs in China...

So self control is the one piece of power that I hold on to -- but
why do some folks give that up?

Apparently , we have a drug problem in our country and more
specifically in our county --- crystal meth. So bi that more than
half of the drug cases in our county involve crystal meth and thus
far in 2006, there have 39 meth related arrests made in Monroe County.

So how do you fight a drug problem?

Law enforcement seems to be, by sheer numbers, doing its part, but
what else can be done?

Education, outreach or an ye-opening experience -- but folks are so
hard to reach. Why do we as humans want to believe that what is bad
for other people may not necessarilly be bad for me?

Look at cigarette smoking. We all know what it does to the body yet
many folks choose to light up anyway.

It's not a secret that lung cancer is a horrible way to die, but
people continue to feed money into the tobacco industry every second
of every dayfor a product that is addictive and deadly. They turn
over a little more self control with every pack purchased.

Then we look over at crystal meth -- if you didn't know, it's bad for
you, really bad for you -- but kids, adults, blue collar, white
collar, men and women try it everyday.

The substance is highly addictive and highly dangerous.

If folk's don't blow up while making it, they'll destroy their bodies
from the inside-out.

Why give yourself over, mind and body, to a crystalized substance
made from fertilizer and battery acid. What's the point?

Life can't be that bad that a person would willingly give themselves
over to the control of a drug.

So what do we do as a community?

We let folks know how bad crystal meth is. We create laws that make
it iharder to purchase the ingrediants to make meth. We keep up the
work on the law enforcement side, and we educate the public to let
them know what to look for and what to stay away from.

We encourage folks to practice self-control before they surrender it
to the forces of a drug that has and will destroy, not only the lives
of the users but the lives of families and friends.
