HEARING TO ADDRESS POT BROWNIES

Wauwatosa -- An East High School junior who added $20 worth of marijuana to
a batch of brownies will face an administrative disciplinary hearing later
this week, Principal John Hays said Monday.

The 17-year-old girl baked the brownies last week and gave two of them to a
friend, 16, during a seventh-period class the afternoon of March 24,
according to a Wauwatosa police report.

The friend became disoriented and lethargic after eating one of the
brownies, and her reaction tipped off school officials to the treat's added
ingredient.

The police report has conflicting statements about whether the 16-year-old
knew the brownies had been made with pot.

Two other students who sampled the brownies disliked the taste and tossed
them out after just a few bites, the police report says.

Hays said the 17-year-old, who has been suspended from school for five
days, may be expelled for her baking experiment. She also faces criminal
charges.

Superintendent Robert Slotterback will make a disciplinary recommendation
after an administrative hearing Wednesday. Expulsion would require the
approval of the School Board.

"Obviously, one considers this to be a very serious offense," Hays said.

The 17-year-old would be the first student expelled from Wauwatosa East
High School this year for a drug offense, although Hays said there has been
at least one prior incident involving a student and illegal drugs this
school year.

"I think it signals a kid making a very dumb choice," Hays said. "I don't
think it signals a growing problem."

The student who baked the brownies declined to comment when contacted at
home Monday afternoon.
