TOO MUCH DRINKING ON CINCO DE MAYO
Over the years, Cinco De Mayo has grown into a celebration of
over-consumption and violence instead of a time to honor the will and
desire of our forefathers. Contrary to what Louis Deleon, Anheuser-Busch
spokesperson, states about Busch's ads reflecting diversity, these beer ads
demean our women, our religious icon and our culture ["Hispanic groups
assail alcohol ads," News, March 29]. Not only do these ads insult us as a
people but they increase alcohol consumption in Hispanic communities that
already have enough to deal with. Ya Basta! It is time to come together to
confront the alcohol industry and gain our dignity back because our culture
is not for sale.
If Anheuser-Busch really cared about the Hispanic community, it would work
on policy measures that would lower consumption and youth-oriented
advertising.
