LOCAL PROGRESS IN FIGHT AGAINST HIV
On behalf of the Board of Directors of Treatment on Demand, Inc., I would
like to publicly thank City Councilor Joseph P. Fortes, all members of the
New Bedford City Council and Mayor Kalisz for the following motion,
submitted by Councilor Fortes, and adopted by the Council and approved by
the mayor:
"That the City Council go on record in support of Treatment on Demand,
located at the William S. Quarles Community Center, 459 Kempton St., and
what they are doing to assist the public in their needs, particularly in the
areas of poverty, oppression, substance abuse and AIDS." This was presented
in conjunction with the dedication and opening of the center, Feb. 21.
In addition to providing meeting space to neighborhood and community, this
new facility enhances the effectiveness of TOD's many programs, which
include Street Outreach Services, Outreach Peer Prevention, Neighborhood
Prevention Points, Teen Empowerment Program, and Sisters United for
Empowerment, as well as a Continuum of Care Collaborative, which teams TOD
with the Dept. of Public Health, New Bedford Child and Family Services and
High Point Treatment Facility to provide educational group meetings,
substance abuse counseling and treatment referrals.
Thanks to all who made possible the opening of the William S. Quarles
Community Center and to all who continue in the struggle to overcome the
twin epidemics of substance abuse and HIV/AIDS.
