PROTECTING THE BORDER

It's about time ["House backs military patrols of U.S. border,"News May 22]!
An active invasion from Mexico has been in progress for decades. In Mexico
it is referred to as the "Invasion Mexicano."

Opponents claim the plan to put U.S. troops on our southern frontier is a
waste of scarce resources. What then is our over-extended presence in
Bosnia-Herzegovina? If we can deploy our "scarce resources" to defend the
borders of Bosnia, why not California, Arizona and Texas? Opponents also
claim such military action would turn the U.S.-Mexican border into an armed
corridor. It already is, except that he weapons are in the hands of the drug
runners and coyotes on the other side.

Prediction: There will be a lachrymose refrain from "immigrant rights"
groups and their apologists that the United States is creating a new "Berlin
Wall." Such critics should be reminded that the Berlin wall was erected to
keep people in, not to keep them out.
