2 LEADERS OF MEXICO METHAMPHETAMINE CARTEL ARE ARRESTED
Two top leaders of Mexico's largest methamphetamine cartel have been
arrested, dealing a major blow to one of the major suppliers to the United
States, the federal Attorney General's Office announced Tuesday.
Brothers Luis and Jesus Amezcua were arrested on Monday and Tuesday.
Fugitives since their brother Adan Amezcua was arrested in a military
operation in the northern state of Colima, they were charged with many
laundering and criminal association.
The Amezcuas' arrest, said Thomas Constantine, head of the U.S. Drug
Enforcement Agency, "should significantly disrupt the established
methamphetamine trade which is carried out by organized crime leaders in
Mexico.
Along with the arrests, Mexican police seized dozens of businesses in three
states, including ranches, pharmacies, gasoline stations and restaurants
belonging to the cartel.
Methamphetamine - a highly addictive synthetic drug also known as crank, ice
or crystal - has gained popularity along the U.S. West Coast and central
states, surpassing usage of crack and other drugs in many communities.
