BALDWIN AGAINST 'GLOBAL DRUG WAR'

Democratic congressional candidate Tammy Baldwin was one of the few U.S.
politicians this week endorsing a national advertisement that maintained
"the global war.on drugs is now causing more harm than drug abuse itself."

The ad, appearing in Monday's New York Times, was in response to the United
Nations' new effort to stem drug abuse. Baldwin's name appeared in the ad.

The ad knocked "failed and lii tile drug war policies" that violate human
rights, hurt the environment and pack prisons with drug law violators.

Baldwin, a member of the state Assembly from Madison, is running for the
Democratic nomination in the 2nd Congressional District. She explained
Wednesday that her observations of the military-style drug war in Columbia
led her to conclude that prevention and treatnient were more effective
options against drugs.

"It's a health-care as well as an education crisis," Baldwin said.
