MEXICO CITY (AP) Gunmen opened fire an army anti-drug patrol in southern
Mexico on Monday, killing at least three soldiers and wounding three others,
the military said in a news release.
The Defense Secretariat said the attack occurred in a remote area on the
road from Zihuatanejo on the Pacific Coast to Ciudad Altamirano a region of
Guerrero state where cultivation of marijuana and other drugs is common.
The military gave no motive for the attack and there were no immediate
indications of involvement by leftist rebels who have sometimes skirmished
with troops in over the past two years.
The most recent rebel confrontation occurred June 7 in El Charco 145 rugged
miles to the east when the army killed 11 people in a gunbattle.
