UNDERCOVER DRUG OPERATION AIMED AT PROJECTS

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) -- Police have begun rounding up the 101 suspected drug
dealers named in indictments handed down after a two-week undercover
investigation featuring pen-sized spy cameras used to tape illicit drug deals.

Mayor Elihu Harris and police officers spent Wednesday tracking down
suspects named in warrants calling for bail ranging from $88,000 to
$120,000. The sweep was expected to continue today.

``We're trying to get enough people off the street at one time so people see
a difference in their neighborhood,'' Harris said.

During the undercover sweep, officers used the tiny cameras hidden inside
hats and vests to videotape 113 drug buys.

Police Capt. Mike Sims said the undercover operation ran between May 16 and
30, one of about four such operations the police carry out a year.

Sims said police focused on housing projects because the Housing Authority
supplied grant money to help pay for the operation.

``We felt it was important to keep property owned by the city free of
drugs,'' Sims said.
