WILSON SIGNS BILL TO END OPEN PRIMARY VOTING
Gov. Pete Wilson signed legislation Monday restoring the old party-by-party
presidential primary in California, saying it would preserve a role for
voters in picking White House nominees.
"By making this change, we will allow Californians to participate in the
national political party process," he said.
His signature puts the proposal on the Nov. 3 ballot; voters most approve
any change to the open primary.
The legislation would restore the system through which voters send
delegates to presidential nominating conventions. It would allow voters to
consider only candidates from their own political party.
