Dear Readers,
Your editing/posting team, the folks who process the items newshawks send
to editor@mapinc.org, would welcome a few more volunteers to help with this
process.
This is a shared workload, with every member of the team able to control
their share of the flow with a few clicks of the mouse. Software controls
the flow and helps in making the articles ready. The team is held together
by a private email list. Basic instructions and controls are in a web
based staff room. All this has come a long way in the past months, making
it reasonably easy for a new team member.
However, before you take this opportunity to join a friendly team of hard
core folks, please give it a little thought. You should know that:
a. Your email just for this effort will approach about a hundred items per
day.
b. While other email programs with superb filters may work, there are some
features in Eudora (either the shareware or commercial version) which has
made it the program of choice for the team. Web based email like hotmail
simply will not work. Sorry! We can guide you thru the process of using
the appropriate software for the task.
c. While our setup is quite flexible, allowing the volunteers to easily go
off duty as needed, or even lower their share of the workload, it would be
hard for a volunteer to stay with it who could not carry a share two or
three days a week, at least (vacations excepted). The average share now
runs about an hour or two of work a day.
d. Among the team members at least, there is no practical way to
participate without close contact. Most team members have met one or more
other members - and, even though we are in two countries now (there are no
borders in our work) we have become a group of good friends.
Please, if you are interested, or have questions about this volunteer work
- - work which is highly valued by the entire drug policy reform community
worldwide - just drop me a note at rlake@mapinc.org
We are ready to welcome you on board!
