POLICE THWART HEROIN SUPPLY TO NANTUCKET

NEW BEDFORD -- A man on a bright red motor scooter led police to break up
what they say was a courier operation to supply Nantucket with heroin.

Seven people were arrested and arraigned in Third District Court yesterday
on various drug charges.

Acting on information that a man was coming into town to purchase a large
quantity of heroin for distribution on the island, narcotics detectives set
up a surveillance at 11 a.m. Thursday of the suspected city supplier.

Narcotics Lt. Mel Wotton said detectives observed the supplier as he met
with an individual on a bright red Yamaha Raz motor scooter in the parking
lot of a South End bar.

After the meeting, detectives followed the man on the scooter back to a
known drug house -- a house where previous narcotics arrests had been made
- -- on Ruth Street.

The man on the scooter was followed to County Street at Rivet Street, where
he was arrested and found to be in possession of about $1,000 worth of pure
heroin.

Detectives followed the main suspect from the Ruth Street home back to a
Seventh Street address.

Detectives then watched the man leaving that home, followed him to another
known drug house, in the North End, then followed him back to the Seventh
Street address.

Outside the house, the man was arrested, at about 1:30 p.m., and found to
be in possession of 200 bags of heroin, Lt. Wotton said.

Inside the apartment, detectives found a 850 more bags of heroin -- a total
of between $4,000 to $5,000 worth -- and several people.

John A. Dexter, 61, of 63 Upper Vest St., Nantucket, was arrested on
charges of possession with intent to distribute heroin; possession with
intent to distribute heroin within 1000 feet of a school zone; and
conspiracy to violate the controlled substance laws. After his arraignment
yesterday, he was ordered held on $2,000 cash bail, and his case was
continued to Sept. 18 for a pre-trial hearing.

Dominick A Milia, 21, of 78 Ruth St., was arrested on charges of possession
with intent to distribute heroin; possession with intent to distribute
heroin within 1000 feet of a school zone; distribution of heroin;
distribution of heroin in a school zone; conspiracy to violate the
controlled substance laws; and with unlicensed operation of a motor
scooter. He was ordered held on $20,000 cash bail, and his case was
continued to Sept. 9 for a pre-trial hearing, after his arraignment yesterday.

distribution of heroin; distribution of heroin within a school zone,
possession of heroin with intent to distribute; possession of heroin with
intent to distribute within 1000 feet of a school zone, and conspiracy to
violate the controlled substance laws. He was ordered held on $15,000 cash
bail, and had his case continued to Sept. 10 after his arraignment yesterday.
