POLICE SERGEANT SHOT

HOLLYWOOD -- A 15-year veteran Hollywood police sergeant was attacked
by a pit bull and shot in the leg while serving a narcotics search
warrant, authorities said.

The suspect walked out of the house just as uniformed and undercover
officers arrived Thursday night, said police Capt. Tony Rode. The
suspect ran back into the house, and officers who followed were
attacked by two pit bulls, he said. Up to four officers opened fire,
killing one dog as it attacked the sergeant, who was shot in the
process, Rode said. The second dog was seriously injured, and a third
survived.

The sergeant was taken to Memorial Regional Hospital with non-life-
threatening injuries. It was not clear whether he was shot directly,
hit by a ricocheting bullet or struck by a bullet that went through
the dog, Rode said. A bullet grazed a second officer.

The suspect was arrested, but details were not immediately available.
The officers were not named.
