Ex-marine Could Face House Probe In Border Killing
A former Marine who shot to death a teen-ager tending goats along the
Texas-Mexico border was cleared in federal and state investigations but
could face a congressional probe.
Rep. Lamar Smith, R-Texas, has begun his own investigation, delving into 20
boxes of evidence and information about the shooting before deciding
whether to conduct hearings.
Clemente Banuelos, a 23 year old Marine from Camp Pendleton, was part of a
military effort to help the Border Patrol curb smuggling when he killed
Esequiel Hernandez Jr., of Redford, Texas, on May 20, 1997.
