DRUGS FIGHT NEEDS RESOURCES
THE massive haul of cocaine in Kinsale at the weekend emphasises the
need for continuous vigilance in the battle against illegal drugs.
The street value of the 300 kilos confiscated -- in the region of
£60 million -- is an indicator of just how much is involved in the
illicit trade.
In global terms, the drug trade is estimated to be worth £175
billion, second only to the arms industry in turnover.
In congratulating the agencies responsible for intercepting the lethal
cargo, there is a need also to underline the necessity of tackling the
problem on a European, and international basis. Ireland's coastline is
a difficult one to police depending solely on our own resources.
