WORKER SMUGGLED DRUGS INTO MILTON JAIL

A former kitchen worker at Maplehurst Detention Centre faces a jail
sentence after pleading guilty to drug trafficking at the provincial
jail.

Janie Elizabeth George, 43, of Bronte Road, Milton, admitted smuggling
a small amount of marijuana into the jail in December.

Judge William Sharpe, Ontario Court (provincial division) remanded her
out of custody to Oct. 19 for sentencing pending completion of a
presentence report.

A charge of possessing a narcotic for the purpose of trafficking was
withdrawn.

PROSECUTOR

Federal prosecutor Bob Lush told the court an informant at the
correctional centre alerted the jail's security staff that a kitchen
worker was being paid to smuggle drugs into the facility for an inmate
who would distribute it.

George, a part-time, contract worker, was identified as the courier
and staff notified police.

An undercover officer with Halton police drug and morality bureau,
Detective Constable Al Albano, contacted the woman and managed to gain
her trust. He then made arrangements for George to take a package for
him into the facility for $100 fee.

ARRESTED

Police followed her and arrested her when she reported for her shift
at the correctional centre on Dec. 21. In addition to the package she
was smuggling for the undercover officer, she was nabbed with a
quarter ounce of marijuana.

Outside the courtroom, Lush said after she was arrested in December,
the inmate she was smuggling the drugs to was transferred to the
Guelph Correctional Centre. A few months later George was caught
bringing drugs for him into that facility.

She pleaded guilty to that charge in Guelph Court and will be
sentenced Oct. 6.
