Coca Leaf Chewing, Codeine Maintenance And Oral Morphine Among Topics To Be
Discussed At September 25 Conference

The world's leading experts in addiction medicine will present innovations
in drug treatment at the New York Academy of Medicine on Friday, September
25, 1998. The conference, entitled "Beyond Oral Methadone: Expanded
Pharmacotherapies for the Treatment of Drug Dependence," will bring together
practitioners and researchers who have been involved in the development of
alternative drug treatment and maintenance therapies. They will share their
countries' experiences with new treatment methods and explore the expansion
of current treatment options.

The conference will be held on Friday, September 25, 1998 from 9:00 a.m. to
5:00 p.m. at the New York Academy of Medicine (5th Avenue and 103rd Street)
in New York. Conference Co-sponsors include Beth Israel Medical Center,
Columbia University School of Public Health, The Lindesmith Center,
Montefiore Medical Center, The New York Academy of Medicine, and the Yale
University Center for Interdisciplinary Research on AIDS.

Presentations will include: *The British Experience with Injectable
Methadone, Oral Morphine, Stimulants and Sedatives *Alternative Maintenance
Treatments in Europe: Buprenorphine, Codeine Maintenance, and Oral Morphine
Maintenance *Office-based Prescription *Stimulants as Maintenance Therapy:
Amphetamines, Coca Leaf Chewing
