MEXICAN POLICE SEIZE TONS OF MARIJUANA
MEXICO CITY (AP) -- Mexican police seized more than 41/2 tons of
marijuana in two northbound trucks during separate operations in Baja
California and Zacatecas states.
Federal police discovered more than 2 tons of the drug Monday in a
truck carrying dry wall through Zacatecas, the government news agency
Notimex reported.
Police called it the most important drug seizure this year in the
state.
Officers arrested driver Roberto Diaz Garcia, who said he was carrying
the shipment from Mexico City to Ciudad Juarez, a border city across
from El Paso, Texas.
On Sunday, police confiscated more than 21/2 tons of marijuana in a
cargo truck in the U.S.-Mexico border city of Mexicali, about 100
miles southeast of San Diego.
The drug, wrapped in 1,711 packages, was hidden within a shipment of
newsprint, state justice officials said in a statement.
Police arrested driver Sosimo Beltran, who had been traveling from the
Sinaloa state capital of Culiacan.
