BIOLA MAN IS ARRESTED IN DUNLAP POT CASE
A man has been arrested on suspicion of growing marijuana near the town of
Dunlap, where three U.S. Forest Service officers were fired upon Wednesday
after stumbling upon the illegal crop.
Ubaldo Arias Valenzuela, 20, of Biola was booked into jail Friday on
suspicion of cultivating marijuana in one of four large fields near Highway
180, said Fresno County Sheriff's Lt. Margaret Mims.
He is not suspected of shooting at the officers, Mims said. The officers
were not injured.
Valenzuela was arrested after he went to Dunlap School and told staff his
car had broken down on Highway 180 and that he was hungry.
School officials, however, became suspicious, Mims said, because Highway
180 was 10 miles away through rugged terrain. The officials also noticed
that Valenzuela's clothes were ripped, he had scratches on his arms and
body, and he reeked of marijuana, the lieutenant said.
School officials fed him milk and cinnamon rolls until sheriff's deputies
arrived. He was arrested without incident.
