MUSEUM EXHIBIT STUDIES ALCOHOL THROUGH THE AGES

BRIDGEPORT - P.T. Barnum's widely known intolerance of alcohol is the basis
for the exhibit "Altered States: Alcohol and Other Drugs in America," which
will open Sept. 26 at the Barnum Museum.

A collaborative effort with the Regional Youth/Adult Substance Abuse
Project, "Altered States" will be displayed through Dec. 27.

The exhibit includes five major components: 1611-1800, the growth of the
tobacco and rum trade in Colonial America; 1800-1860, the rise of alcohol
consumption and the emergence of the temperance movement; 1860-1900,
medicinal and recreational uses of alcohol and the rekindling of the
temperance crusade; 1900-1960, drug laws, Prohibition, the "beats" and the
Cold War; and 1960- 1995, LSD, other drugs and the "counterculture."
