SPOTLIGHT ON THE CANDIDATES: DAN LUNGREN

LUNGREN ON THE ISSUES

CHARACTER: In indirect slam at presidential scandal, bills himself as "a
governor you can trust."

ABORTION: Opposes it, except in cases of rape, incest and when the mother's
life is endangered. He says it is irrelevant to the campaign, although
Democrats raise it in ads.

EDUCATION: Supports school vouchers. Would spend $1 billion for new school
books, require students to spend 180 days per year in class.

ECONOMY: Wants to limit payouts in lawsuits and ease environmental
regulations, claiming they hurt business and are "job killers." Says he
would eliminate state auto taxes, expand tax credits for business research
and development.

BIO

BORN: Sept. 22, 1946, Long Beach

BACKGROUND: Graduated from Notre Dame University, Georgetown University Law
Center. 4-F draft deferment during Vietnam War. Former lifeguard,
warehouseman, corporate lawyer. Tried one criminal case, as a defense
lawyer.

PERSONAL: Roman Catholic. Married to Barbara "Bobbi" Lungren. Three
children. Lives in Roseville, Placer County. Father John Lungren was a GOP
activist and personal physician to President Richard Nixon. Brother Brian
is a GOP political consultant.

POLITICAL CAREER: Former staffer to Sen. George Murphy. Represented Long
Beach in Congress, 1978-88. Opposed abortion, pushed for tax cuts, landmark
1986 immigration reform. Nominated state treasurer, but was not confirmed,
1988. Elected attorney general, 1990 and 1994.

CAMPAIGN FINANCE: Top donors, 1990-present: E & J Gallo Winery, $252,000;
Stockton developer and sportsman Alex Spanos, $232,000; Los Angeles media
magnate A.J. Perenchio, $212,000; Chevron Corp., $194,000; California
Insurance PAC, $174,000.

ATTORNEY GENERAL: Fought to expedite execution of convicted killers. Backed
"three strikes" sentencing law for felons. Sued to shut down "Cannabis
Buyer's" clubs after medicinal marijuana initiative passed. Conducted
gambling raids on Indian rancherias.

ETC.: Lists two heroes - Abraham Lincoln and former colleague Rep. Henry
Hyde, R-Ill., chairman of the House Judiciary Committee and head of Clinton
impeachment inquiry.
