COMPLAINTS TARGET DRUG ROADBLOCKS

INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA -- The Indiana Civil Liberties Union is getting
phone calls from surprising quarters after recent drug roadblocks in
the city.

Its legal director, Ken Falk, said Wednesday that many conservatives
are calling for the first time, surprising themselves and the
organization, which usually is associated with liberal viewpoints.

The callers say they are concerned the roadblocks violate citizens'
rights guaranteed by the U.S. and Indiana constitutions, Falk said.

The ICLU agrees that the roadblocks, which police use to randomly
check vehicles for drugs, ensnare innocent citizens and violate their
4th Amendment rights against search and seizure.

The organization filed a federal class-action complaint Wednesday
against the city, its mayor and the Indianapolis Police Department.
