BIBLE DOES NOT CONDEMN CANNIBIS

Alcohol and cannabis have no place in Christian worship. So says
letter writer Steve Buckley (Tit for Tat on Drugs, July 13). And he
encourages anyone who believes otherwise "to go back and read (the)
Bible more closely." I'm guessing Buckley's Bible is missing the parts
where Jesus turned water into wine. Or the verse that begins, "this is
my blood, drink in rememberance of me ..."

Buckley is certainly entitled to his opinion that alcohol and cannabis
are incompatible with a Christian lifestyle or Christian worship. Of
course that opinion does put him at odds with the few hundred million
Christians around the world who drink from the cup each week, nd the
millions more who have used cannabis as part of their spiritual
journey throughout the centuries.

Cannabis, or kanna bosum, is mentioned frequently in the Bible as a
spiritual adjunct. Many Christian sects continue to use cannabis as
part of their worship to this day. Sects that can trace their
traditions directly back to the early church 2,000 years ago.

I say let Mr. Buckley worship as he chooses and leave the rest of us
in peace to worship as we please. Isn't that what our American freedom
is all about?
