TIP LEADS COPS TO POT PLANTS
Police netted almost $300,000 in marijuana yesterday in a drug bust in
Cantley, Que. A man and a woman, both 38, were arrested at 470 Montee
des Erables after police received a tip that plants were being grown
inside the home. Two basement rooms had been converted into a
greenhouse holding 524 plants worth $272,000, QPP Const. Gilles
Couture said. The couple, which lives at the residence, were released
last night on a promise to appear.
They will be charged with possession and production of marijuana,
police said.
A crash on Hwy. 17 between Renfrew and Arnprior yesterday closed the
highway for six hours and sent six people to hospital -- including one
with life-threatening injuries.
OPP said the crash occurred at about 12:40 p.m. when a westbound
mini-van approaching Miller Rd. was broadsided by a pickup truck.
The truck flipped on its side while the van crashed into a
ditch.
The driver of the pickup truck, Bruce Moore of Pembroke, has been
charged with failing to yield on a through road, while the van's
driver, Michel Thibodeau, of Hearst, has been charged with failing to
ensure his passengers were wearing seatbelts.
The cash-strapped Wild Bird Care Centre's request for funding should
be denied, a regional council committee has recommended. Centre
founder Kathy Nihei had asked for $40,000 to help recover from
January's ice storm, which caused bird admission numbers to soar and
created much work clearing up damaged trees.
The committee directed staff to help the centre seek compensation from
ice storm disaster relief funds instead.
Firefighters in Val des Monts squelched a blaze yesterday morning that
destroyed half a duplex and left eight people homeless.
Officials said the fire began at about 10:30 a.m. at 117 Chemay de la
Promenade. All the occupants were out when fire broke out.
Firefighters were able to save half the house, but much of the
contents were wrecked by smoke and water.
Investigators said the fire started in a clothes dryer which was left
running.
No damage estimate was available.
