STUDENTS ADMIT USE OF ANTI-ANXIETY DRUG

Seven Lanier High School students were taken to the hospital Tuesday
afternoon after they told school officials they had taken the
anti-anxiety drug Xanax on campus.

"It appeared one of them could have taken as many as a dozen of these
tablets," San Antonio School District spokesman Bobby Zamora said.

The male students range in age from 15 to 19, and are friends, he
said.

They admitted to taking the pills after they were confronted about
their unusual behavior.

"They were dazed," Zamora said. "They were not themselves."

School officials called EMS, and the students were taken to Santa Rosa
Hospital.

Parents met school officials at the hospital. It appeared all of the
students were OK, Zamora said.

Xanax is one of a class of drugs called central nervous system
depressants. The drugs are sometimes prescribed to relieve nervousness
or treat insomnia.
