DRIVE TO TEST FOR DRUG USE

POLICE in north Queensland will have the power to test drivers for
drug use under a trial starting later this month, Transport Minister
Steve Bredhauer confirmed yesterday.

During the campaign, police will examine the breathing, speech, eyes
and appearance of drivers whose driving they judge to be impaired but
who have tested negative for alcohol.

Drivers who appeared to be affected by drug use would be taken to a
police station to provide a blood sample, Mr Bredhauer said.

Police currently had the power to require drivers to provide blood
samples, so the trial could be put in place without changes to
legislation.

"If we want to pursue the trial on a permanent basis, then there may
be a need for legislative changes to empower the police to administer
the practical tests on a full-time basis," he said.
