ILLINI SUSPEND PAIR AFTER ARREST
Illinois football coach Ron Turner said Monday he has suspended junior
wide receivers Terrance Smalls and William Loyd for Saturday's season
finale at Michigan State after the players' arrest Friday night for
possession of marijuana.
"We're extremely disappointed," Turner said, "and this is something
we're not going to tolerate. I've met with them, but I'd rather wait
to say more until we get all the facts in. Could they be gone
permanently? Yes. But first I want to look at the history of each guy.
If it's the first time someone has been in trouble you look at it a
little differently than if it has been repeated a number of times."
Smalls and Loyd were arrested after Urbana police responded to a
complaint of loud music at an apartment and said they saw marijuana in
plain view. Also arrested were former Illinois football player Ola
Allibalogun and Sakhome Hemsouvanh of Champaign.
Smalls, a transfer from Citrus (Calif.) Community College, has started
five games at flanker this season, catching 11 passes for 101 yards.
He has been Illinois' second-leading kick returner with 161 yards in
seven games. Loyd, a transfer from Mesa (Ariz.) Community College, has
been sidelined since suffering a broken foot in the Iowa game on Sept.
