DOPE GROWER BALKS AT CURFEW, SERVICE

A marijuana advocate briefly considered going to jail yesterday instead of
serving a drug sentence in the communitee.

Chris Buors, president of the Anti-Prohibition League of Manitoba, which
protests pot laws, recieved a 23 month conditional sentence, but balked at
the strict conditions imposed by Justice Sydney Schwartz. If he served the
jail time he would be out in six months.

Buors pleaded guilty last month to one count of cultivating marijuana and
one count of possessing it for the purpose of trafficking. He was arrested
in January of 1997 after police raided a hydrophonic grow at 1106 Winnipeg
Ave. worth almost a million dollars.

Buors accepted the penalty, which means he must be home between 8 p.m. and
6 a.m. for the next year. He can't drive, must find a job, and must perform
240 hours of community service. He'll then be on probation for a year.
