STAR-TELEGRAM HONORED FOR SERIES

The Star-Telegrams yearlong series The Hell of Heroin received an
Exceptional Merit award yesterday from the Community Action Network in
a ceremony in New York.

Winners in the 11th annual Media and Corporate Awards were chosen for
presenting community solutions to crucial social problems such as
hunger, homelessness and drug abuse. Those honored included 13
newspapers, 13 consumer magazines, nine television stations and nine
radio stations.

The Star-Telegram series was honored in the category for projects
initiated by print or broadcast media. The first-place winner was The
Reporter of Fond du Lac, Wis., which conducted a town hall meeting so
readers could air concerns about issues they believed would be
important in the community by 2000.

The second-place winner was the Anchorage Daily News for a series that
forced changes in a child welfare program. The third-place winner was
the Staten Island (N.Y.) Cable for a television program to spotlight
academic achievement in the community.
