WHO'S LAUGHING?
A 16-YEAR-old teenager capable of thinking for herself objects to drug
promotion on Triple J ('Cool' Radio Station A Bad Influence, Letters,
3/12). She is immediately blasted by a conformist 18-year-old telling her
to lighten, up (Drug Jokes Not Meant Seriously, Letters, 5-6/12).
A large percentage of teenage zombies are the victims of "lighten up". Anna
Wood died "lightening up" and she isn't the only one. Perhaps Triple J
should reflect that subjects funny or satirical to some people are
decidedly unfunny, even offensive, to others. "Meant to be funny" is not at
all the same as being funny.
If more teenagers made a point of being non-conformist we might have the
drug problem halfway licked.
