CIVIC NOT RIGHT FOR INJECTING ROOM

THE CANBERRA City Heart Business Association Inc is seriously concerned by
the proposal put forward by the ACT Minister for Health to establish a
"safe injecting room" in Civic.

Our association accepts that accessibility to such a facility is important
to the users, but as this is a health issue it would seem that the hospital
is the appropriate location. The hospital is on a transport network equal
to that which serves Civic.

There is no evidence that the majority of addicts are concentrated in and
around Civic and indeed the evidence is that addicts live in the areas that
reflect their demographic.

Our association doubts that the NSW Minister for Health would recommend
such a facility in or around, say, Martin Place, or the South Australian
Minister for Health making a similar recommendation for a facility in or
around the Rundle Mall.
