MORTGAGE COMPANY TO DONATE FROM FEES
Settlements will aid programs in Carroll.
A Timonium mortgage company planned to announce today its alliance
with the Carroll County state's attorney to donate money toward
countywide battles such as substance abuse and domestic violence.
First Central Mortgage Co. will turn over $100 for the settlement of
each mortgage that is financed or refinanced in Carroll County through
loan officer Debra Clinton.
Clinton, a Carroll County resident, said yesterday that the idea of
helping her community began last year when a colleague initiated a
similar program in Baltimore County to assist a high school boosters'
club.
"I figured that if it could work to help a school, why not try helping
good causes in my own community?" said Clinton.
Her employer and Jerry F. Barnes, state's attorney for Carroll County,
welcomed the plan, Clinton said.
Through his office, Barnes and his staff have implemented or supported
programs within the past 18 months, including formation of domestic
violence and victim-witness impact units; a Heroin Kills program;
Reality Program, an early intervention effort aimed at giving young
first-time offenders a choice of avoiding juvenile prosecution; and
other public- and student- awareness initiatives.
Clinton has structured a flexible alliance, giving Barnes the freedom
to direct whatever money is generated toward any of the programs
promoting education, prevention, treatment or prosecution.
"We think it is great that First Central has come to us, offering to
help," said Barnes.
First Central becomes another in the list of corporate sponsors that
have stepped forward to assist the state's attorney's fight against
crime.
Others include Westminster Security, Bell Atlantic Mobile, Wal- Mart
and Target.
To qualify and ensure that First Central's donations are properly
directed, property owners must call Clinton at 410-561-3550, or toll-
free at 800-894- 7334, to obtain a mortgage or refinance.
