I SYMPATHIZE with Mr. Upsdell's concern that individuals should take
responsibility for their wrongdoings. However, the punishment should
not cause more harm than the crime itself.
The police action during a child's birthday party in Surrey, B.C.
harmed innocent bystanders including several young children who played
no part in any crime or wrongdoing. One man was hospitalized because
he was brutally beaten by an officer of the law and the family pet was
killed by gunshots administered by law enforcement officers. The
terror caused by this event will live forever in the hearts of these
children.
Did the punishment fit the crime? Should the police be free to act in
an angry rampage against those who are suspected of committing a crime
and against a suspect's neighbours, children, pets and other loved
ones?
Police officers are not our judges and jury. Their role is to detain
and deliver suspected offenders to courts of law where the facts can
be considered and punishment meted out. They are to do this in a
manner that is safe.

(Let's face it, this was a case of very poor judgment.)
