FBI DIRECTOR FREEH TO VISIT MEXICO
WASHINGTON (AP) FBI Director Louis J. Freeh will make his first trip to
Mexico to discuss joint efforts against drug trafficking and other major
crimes.
During his visit Thursday and Friday, Freeh will meet with Mexican Attorney
General Jorge Madrazo Cuellar, Government Secretary Fransico Labastida
Ochoa and others. The visit follows a joint training session for Mexican
and U.S. lawmen in South Carolina last November hosted by Attorney General
Janet Reno.
Outstanding law enforcement issues between the two countries include the
U.S. desire to have its agents authorized to carry firearms into Mexico
when working on joint anti-drug operations.
In addition, U.S. officials have been dismayed that, despite polygraph
testing and background checks by U.S. officials, a series of Mexican law
enforcement and military units assigned to anti-drug work have had agents
and officials corrupted by bribes from free-spending drug traffickers.
