A `RIVER COP'

Ramon de Jesus Perez, a witness in his cousin Miguel Moya's trial for
jury fixing, was one of the infamous Miami River cops -- implicated in
a corruption scandal that rocked the city in the late 1980s.

The "River Cops" case got its nickname when three drug smugglers
drowned in 1985 while police officers were stealing a boatload of
cocaine. The subsequent investigation revealed cash-and-cocaine
rip-offs by corrupt cops who raided boat yards along the Miami River.

Ultimately, about 100 officers were arrested, fired, suspended or
reprimanded during the investigation. At least 18 former officers were
sentenced to prison.
