HUGE HAUL OF COCAINE SEIZED ON FREIGHTER
In one of the biggest cocaine busts in U.S. history, authorities in Houston
seized nearly 5 tons of the drug aboard a freighter delivering iron ore
from Brazil.
The Coast Guard found 9,5000 pounds of cocaine - with estimated street
value of $186 million - during an inspection at sea last week of the
580-foot Cannes, a Greek-owned, Panamanian-registered cargo ship.
"This amount of cocaine could put at least one dose of the drug in the hand
of every schoolchild across America, from preschool to high school,"
Transportation Secretary Rodney Slater said Thursday.
Coast Guard officials accompanied the ship to Houston. Four people were
arrested.
