PA. PRISONS 99-PERCENT DRUG FREE
(GRATERFORD) - A new study finds state officials are winning the war
on drugs in prison. The study from the National Institute of Justice
follows a four year effort by the Department of Corrections to crack
down on drug smuggling and drug trafficking in the state's prisons.
The study surveyed 1- thousand inmates from five prisons at random,
and found 7- point-8-percent tested positive for some type of drug in
1996. That number fell to 1-point-4- percent last year. Corrections
Secretary Martin Horn says that means Pennsylvania's 11 prisons are
nearly 99-percent drug free.
