U.S. CUSTOMS RETHINKING ITS POLICY
(NEW YORK) - The U.S. Customs Service is rethinking its policy of
allowing those suspected of smuggling illegal drugs to have an X-ray
instead of a conventional strip-search. The New York Times reports
that all nine people offered the X-ray option refused it at John F.
Kennedy International Airport during a three-month test period. Why?
Possible drug couriers who swallowed narcotics internally might fear
detection. Tourists might fear the health consequences of an X-ray.
Or maybe the inconvenience of not having the x-rays in the airport
but in medical centers may play a role.
