COLLEGE PRESIDENT'S SON IS CHARGED WITH UNDERAGE DRINKING AT OFFICIAL
RESIDENCE
The 18-year-old son of Christopher Newport University President Paul S.
Trible, Jr., was charged Friday with underage possession of alcohol during a
party at the president's state-owned home. The arrest of Paul S. Trible III
comes six months after the college banned alcohol sales on its campus.
According to the Associated Press, there were at least 15 people at a party
this month, all below the legal drinking age of 21. Several people ran from
the house when the police arrived to break up the party, but Mr. Trible was
among seven people cited. Mr. Trible's parents were not at home at the time
of the party.
President Trible, a former Republican U.S. Congressman and Senator, was one
of several college presidents in Virginia to serve on the state Attorney
General's Task Force on Drinking by College Students, formed in 1997
following the alcohol-related deaths of six Virginia college students.
Christopher Newport is predominantly a commuter school, and many of its
students are adults. Up until the alcohol ban, beer and wine had been sold
in the university's student center.
President Trible could not be reached for comment Sunday. Last spring, he
told the Richmond Times-Dispatch that children drink because authority
figures send them mixed messages. "The message we are getting out is don't
drink and drive," Mr. Trible said. "But the message that is not getting out
is don't drink. It's not just students. It's a larger issue. It's society,
and that's us."
