NYC STEPS UP WAR ON DRUGS
(NEW YORK) - New York City is stepping up its war on drugs by
reassigning 600 cops to nine troubled police precincts.
According to the New York Post, about half the cops in the initiative
will be part of narcotics teams made up of a sergeant, five or six
investigators and two undercover cops who do the dangerous buy part of
the 'buy and bust' operations. Another 300 uniformed cops will begin
to patrol the targeted neighborhoods to add a visible presence,
discourage drug users and dealers on the street, and keep an eye out
for so-called lifestyle crimes associated with drug use. The latest
assignment represents a racheting up of the city's ongoing drug
initiative under the theory that drugs breed other types of crime and
combating dealers will bring down crime in general.
