.02 ALCOHOL LEVEL TO LOSE LICENSE IF BILL OK'D
OLYMPIA -- A bill that would suspend the licenses of drivers with blood
alcohol levels as low as .02 passed a Senate committee without dissent
yesterday.
The bill, sponsored by Sen. Michael Heavey, D-West Seattle, would make it a
traffic infraction to drive with blood alcohol levels between .02 and .08,
punishable by a license suspension of 30 days.
The Legislature just last year lowered the threshold for driving under the
influence from .10 to .08.
Heavey conceded the bill, opposed by the liquor and restaurant industries as
tantamount to prohibition, has only about a 50-50 chance of reaching the
full Senate for a debate this year.
