MEDICINAL POT WOULD OPEN DOOR

Federal Health Minister Allan Rock has authorized clinical trials to
determine the therapeutic benefits of marijuana for people suffering
from chronic or terminal illnesses.

Tuesday's question was: Do you think medical use of marijuana would
open the door to its legalization?

YES: 52%

NO: 48%

146 calls

Yes, I don't believe you have to be ill to benefit from the
therapeutic benefits of marijuana.

No. But I wouldn't mind if it did. I'm a senior, non-smoker, who has
never used a drug, but I'd like to see something like they have in
Holland. However, this won't happen because the Americans will not let
us. We always do what they tell us to.

Yes. I certainly hope so. I am a registered nurse and it infuriates me
to see patients suffering unnecessarily when there are excellent drugs
on the market to relieve that suffering The only reason why these
patients aren't getting these drugs is because the authorities are
afraid the drugs will tall into the wrong hands, such as junkies.

No. We have many other substances on the market, like morphine,
Demerol, Percodan, Valium, that people will try to abuse even though
they're for medical purposes. You can't keep it from people who need
it just because what others might do with it.

Yes. It's hard to believe the cowardice of governments around the
marijuana question when they permit, for taxation purposes, smoking,
which has killed countless people.

No. I sincerely hope not. It can be replaced by other drugs that are
better controlled. Marijuana is already all over the place. If you
legalize it for medical use, you're just going to open the door to a
real mess.

Yes. It probably would. Everyone knows that doctors' prescriptions are
abused. Criminals would soon find a way around that.

No. But I think it should be legalized. I don't use the stuff myself
and never will, but I don't see any point in it being illegal when
they could make money oft it by taxing it.

Yes. We have enough stoned people walking the streets now. We don't
need any more. Kids of 10,12,13 years are using drugs and getting stoned.

No. I do think, though, that for people who are helped by it in
certain illnesses, it should be legal to use it in moderation.

Yes. I had cancer, too, so I can see what they're talking
about.

No. Right now they're using morphine in hospitals. I don't think
they'll go for legalization of marijuana.

Yes. A drug legal to government standards is not hurting anyone and
(marijuana use) is a victimless crime.
