HEROIN OVERDOSE BRINGS CHARGES OF MANSLAUGHTER
SANTA CLARA -- A Santa Clara man has been charged with involuntary
manslaughter in connection with the fatal overdose of a San Jose woman
he allegedly supplied with heroin at a motel in an unincorporated area
of Santa Clara County.
The woman's 5-month-old son, who was in the same room at the Capitol
Hill Inn motel room on Monterey Road, has been taken to the Santa
Clara County Children's Shelter, said Sgt. John Hirokawa, a spokesman
for the county sheriff's office.
Matthew C. Dehn, 37, has been released in lieu of $20,000 bail. Dehn
did not appear in court Wednesday for his scheduled arraignment.
Attempts to reach him were unsuccessful.
But Hirokawa said Dehn "is culpable" in the Saturday death because it
happened as a result of his illegal act of providing 34-year-old
Regina Nelson with the drug.

Filing fees rising for legal papers
SAN JOSE -- All filing fees for first papers filed in Santa Clara
County Superior Court cases rose $3 this month, with proceeds
providing support for the county's law library.
The increase authorized by the board of supervisors means that first
papers for plaintiffs and petitioners in general jurisdiction matters,
including civil, family and probate, will increase from $190 to $193.
Those for defendants and respondents will rise from $187 to $190.
In limited jurisdiction matters, plaintiffs' first papers will
increase to $98 for complaints over $10,000 and to $91 for complaints
seeking $10,000 or less. For parties other than plaintiffs, the fee
will be $88.
At the same time, the former municipal court policy of refunding only
overpayments of $10 or more is extended to all Superior Court divisions.
Donations sought for Easter baskets
SAN JOSE -- Donated clothing and Easter baskets will be given to 200
selected families, and the sponsoring St. Vincent de Paul Society is
asking for volunteers to help put on its Easter Bonnets & Baskets
event on March 27 at its San Jose Thrift Store.
The society is asking for donations of new clothing and shoes, candy
and dental hygiene products to fill the children's baskets and for
volunteers Tuesdays through Saturdays to sort clothing. Students from
