CIVIL LIBERTIES

ROSELLE -- The recent decision of officials in New York City to
confiscate the cars of people merely suspected, not convicted, of
drunk driving takes us another step closer to a police state. This
policy presents more problems than it solves. Expect more innocent
people to be deprived of a necessary part of their livelihood, expect
families of those who have had their cars taken to suffer, expect
courtrooms to be clogged, expect more corruption of law enforcement,
but don't expect the problem of drunk driving to go away.

The news from New York City should remind everyone how fragile civil
liberties are and how quickly an overzealous government can simply
waive rights previously guaranteed by the Constitution.
