MAN JUMPS OUT OF MOVING AMBULANCE

ORLANDO, Fla. - A man being transported to the hospital
following a heroin overdose jumped from an ambulance going 35 mph and
ran into the woods as cars braked and swerved to avoid him.

Matthew Heffelfinger, 31, was being transported Friday when "all of a
sudden, he said, `I don't want to go,"' said Kathy Putnam, spokeswoman
for Rural Metro Ambulance. "While he's doing this, he's tearing off
the straps from the stretcher and pulling out his IVs."

Before calling the ambulance, Heffelfinger's grandmother found him on
his bed, blue in the face and unconscious next to a syringe and a tablespoon.

Paramedics gave him an injection of Narcan, a heroin antidote,
according to emergency medical personnel and Orange County sheriff's
reports.

In the ambulance, Heffelfinger got up, spraying blood and intravenous
fluids from the tubes pulled from his arms, Putnam said. That's when
he opened the rear door and jumped.

"He's OK," Florence Heffelfinger, the man's grandmother, said
Saturday. "It's over, and let it drop."

It wasn't clear whether Heffelfinger might face any
charges.
